The whole premise of scythes is to moderate population growth after humanity has achieved a form of regenerative immortality. While I recognize the point of the story line- I still find myself amazed that moderating reproduction and use of birth control aren't even glancing topics mentioned in the story where it's concerned about population control and the entire solution is "gleaning" people.
