Reading this in a city on the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean (lots of Arctic terns last September), while experimenting the same sense of melancholic loneliness of the main character, feels different

The ice spreads wide and dazzling, edged by black-and-white ocean and a distant gray horizon. Great shards of cerulean ice float languidly by, even now within the heart of summer. And dozens of Arctic terns fill the white of sky and earth. The last of them, perhaps in the world. If I were capable of staying in any place, it might be here.
But the birds won't stay, and neither will I.
