The cleanup of this rift has been an ongoing journey and recognizing my deep fear of not belonging, and not being fought for by the people I’ve perceived to be the closest to me

The long-term community the disciples would form would need a broader basis than shared hurt. There would also be an element of shared joy.

I am personally convinced that the Jesus a lot of people are walking away from is not Jesus at all, as the only Jesus I recognize now is an oppressed, persecuted, brown skinned man who was trampled by an empire, not a mascot who was invented for one. But nothing about what you see on your road can be dictated, for this is very much your path, and the path must be trusted, and you must be trusted to walk it.

“Sometimes for vocational reasons or out of familial or social pressure, people haven’t left the building, but their hearts checked out a long time ago, and they’ve been walking the road for years without ever leaving the city limits. I don’t think there is a more solitary, lonely feeling than that.”

Despair, experienced alone, is the deepest and darkest hell. Shared, grief and longing build a holy cathedral, a place for the spirit to dwell.

But we always have a choice. Always. We always have the choice to say, I'm just not ready. It is a great risk to drop all these protective layers, to burn down what we've relied on. It is a great risk to trust something other than our trying. Burn it down. You do not have to be afraid of being yourself anymore. I need to burn down everything in the way of my being honest. Honesty is the way home.

I felt caught as a child, which was a by-product of divorce. A child just feels caught. Because they are imprinted with a desire for wholeness, and that wholeness is fractured, they are left a bit confused. And so a skin, a tough skin, gets layered over the child's openness, and the message is, "Don't you dare get caught again. Getting caught is a lose-lose. Don't ever be between again."

Research has shown that 50 of a person's overall happiness is genetic. Every person has a genetic "set point" of happiness that is inborn and does not change, regardless of circumstances or behaviors.

Melissa Corrick is on page 81 of 320 of All the Pretty Things: The Story of a Southern Girl Who Went through Fire to Find Her Way Home
"But after hearing so many fire and brimstone sermons, I eventually emerged from those early years with this vague sense that God was angry with me, that I was always failing to measure up to some standard of behavior and decorum. So I kept on getting saved and baptized and walking the aisles to rededicate my life to the Lord."

Quitting on page 50 because this book is silly. Especially after this statement "many parents who would never allow their children to attend public school will send them to dance classes. They will refuse to have them influenced by secular humanism in school, but will expose them to unbiblical ideas of beauty in dance class."
