Shelving. The characters, setting and story are all wonderfully crafted. It’s unlike anything I normally read and has been very well-written. However, the story itself can be a bit too dark for me (cue interaction with Gaspar and Mercedes in the tunnel).

“No man could escape choices that involved, day after day, an evaluation of his goals, of the meaning of his existence, and of the purpose of the social forms and institutions that surrounded him.”

There’s a strong parallel from the emigrant to immigrant to that of my own story leaving Minnesota and finding my own way in the world. To this day I still daily evaluate my goals and purpose in the world around me.
