Even my favorite authors miss the mark for me once in awhile. :(

I am permanently unwell after reading this book. 5 stars is simply inadequate to describe how this book utterly wrecked me. Kane/Helena forever and always.

Read this bc it’s a classic, but I never wanted to pick it up. The Derby accent was nearly unintelligible, and the plot barely there (I prefer lots of plot so that’s my hangup, not the book’s). I can see how it was controversial at the time, but the tension it would have caused at the time doesn’t translate to modern readers.

So far so good! I have been intimidated by this book but I am so glad I finally picked it up!
