In case anyone’s wondering how descriptive this book is, a sample: “It is, to put it most precisely, the rich, thick scent of the anus of a clean man, combined with the smells of his warm skin, his armpits sometime around mid-day, the head of his ripely scented uncircumcised penis (a trace of ammonia) and the sweetish, nutty, acrid, visceral smell of his breath. There’s simply no other way to describe it.”

Why is this book STILL GOING

What … is this?

Are … are there actually people like these characters? Do people actually think and talk like this? If not, why are we writing them like this and if so, please god let them continue to evade my acquaintance.

Might start pulling out my fingernails to ease the pain of listening to this.

I like to listen to audiobooks while I’m driving but this is simply too boring to be safe on the road. Not at all what I had expected.

Just eight more hours. 🫠

I truly do not know what to do with this book. It was enthusiastically recommended to me by two people who I very much like and respect, but I am not feeling it for a number of reasons and at 30% done, there are still 20 hours to go (1.5 speed).

Chronologically, I’m 12.5 hours into this, but if rewinds counted, I’m probably at 15-plus. The narrator’s reading is very *~!*theatrical*!~*, which distracts from the material. I can’t stop noticing him and losing track of the book, which is not tenable for a history of this density. I’m quite irritated that I wasted an audiobook credit and now need to go buy a hard copy so I can concentrate.
