Rant: I’m enjoying this book and the writing, but not the constant comments about how weak and exhausted she feels. It rarely connects to what’s happening, so it feels repetitive instead of meaningful. I understand the author wants representation, but there’s no evidence of it beyond repeatedly stating it. Coming back from two years of being trapped and malnourished would be a better story. She’s pandering.

The prose cadence never deepens or varies enough to create emotional weight.

I’m invested in the story, characters, and relationship dynamics, but the writing keeps flattening the emotional impact. I’m entertained and want to keep reading, but the prose keeps pulling me out of the story.

* emotions are stated clearly
* complexity is smoothed over quickly
* scenes don’t linger or layer deeply
* sentence construction stays fairly simple/direct

I’m flying through this. It’s very readable and relationship focused, but I’m feeling emotionally unsatisfied. Big emotional and political moments get introduced, explained quickly, and moved past, so the story feels simple, with less depth than I need to connect with a book. I am enjoying it though, and I still want to know what happens next.
