I completely missed the subtlety in Flannery O'Connor's story, The River. Nonetheless, I found the story's construction awkward. It's unclear why a strange woman shows up to take the small boy to a revival.

I found The Trial of Mr. M by Louis Auchincloss enigmatic in its treatment of racism in the 1950s. The narrative is representative of the racist attitudes of the 50's, but I'm unclear about what point Auchencloss is trying to make.

Well-developed descriptions of characters and scenery, followed by occasional flashes of the strange. Unexpected changes in points of view, lots of drinking episodes, and a couple of undeveloped references to deformed children and revenants that allude to relationships with the strange phenomenon being exploited.
