I’m liking the story but the author struggles keeping scenes coherent, there are inconsistencies within scenes, especially the fight scene with the governor, that make it hard to follow. Like Florian getting toppled head first onto the floor by Marceau but then Jacquotte sees a shadow behind Marceau and it’s… Florian. So is he on the floor or not? It’s very clunky and awkward.

Listening to a story set in winter on a snow-covered Canadian island while I’m here dying in a 40 degrees Celsius heatwave certainly is an experience in imagination

Les fautes de frappe non-corrigées c’est trop ! Je n’impute pas du tout ça à l’auteur, mais au traducteur et à l’éditeur, il s’agirait de relire son travail. Une ou deux fautes dans un livre c’est normal mais à presque chaque chapitre ? Pour autant que je sache ce n’est pas une première édition que je lis. La dernière en date : “Saga” au lieu de “Sara”.

Ok I get it Claudia is Reiko years in the future but why didn’t we have at least one quick chapter to show how she got there? Last we saw her she was about to get caught for her scam, it seems too easy to put her in a complicated spot and then just jump years into the future and not show how she got herself out of that… I’m a bit disappointed because I’ve been really liking the story so far

Last quarter of the book seems a bit late to introduce a whole new main character, I was so invested in Beatrice and Reiko’s stories

Forgot about Bantling gallivanting about Europe with Henrietta. He’s the exception to the rule. I’ll be cheering for him from now on.

The responsible thing is to return to the capital? So after someone clearly broke your wards and managed to set off a magical artifact and wreak havoc you just… leave the place? And the artifacts? Instead of staying and investigating who did that? That’s the least responsible thing to do are they stupid?

This is such a strange book because on some things I really disagree with the author but then some parts are so relatable, like her struggle with figuring out she has depression and needs help but is also scared of what the medication is going to do to her - that it hits really close to home. In the end I’m glad I decided to read this book and push through even though I didn’t like it at first
