Thus far:
- After Matthiessen's wife passed away from cancer, Matthiessen immediately abandoned his 8-year-old child to go on this trip.
- He and GS carry none of their stuff, yet complain that the porters who carry all their stuff travel too slowly and demand too much pay (a dollar a day).
- GS self-righteously "tossed used cans and papers into [a] schoolyard." ("the local people are always avid for containers")

I frequently lose track in the middle of a (page-length) sentence and have to restart, but I actually am enjoying reading this so far. It's remarkable how many ideas about gender that are still controversial today (and that I thought were more recent) are discussed and rebutted in this book from 30 years ago.

This book is actually amazing.

Part 2 is known for being meta, and in universe part 1 of the book has been published and widely read (which is weird to me, because it seems like part 2 starts a month after the end of part 1). Sancho even "corrects" some of the more notable writing mistakes in part 1.

Finished reading the first part of the book. Generally, I'm feeling a lot more positive about this book than after I read the first few chapters. The violence and cruelty is a little off-putting, but the book still manages to be laugh-out-loud funny.

Honestly chapter 25 was actually pretty funny. I also have been enjoying just how many mistakes and plot holes have been called out by the footnotes.

So far, this has been a weirdly depressing read, despite its attempts at humor. Don Quixote is just not fun to read about.

So far, mostly dull, but with frequently delightful turns of phrase.

Living up to all the hype so far.
