Quite fun but not as substantial as her major works. It gives a good picture of Austen’s insight into the manipulations of scheming people who have all the advantages of the appearance of propriety and can do great damage to others when their utter self-centeredness goes undetected.

Ninety percent of this book is completely confusing. I almost gave up on it multiple times, but had promised my son I would pre-read it to see if he could. The last 10% really does tie everything up and the ending is a total surprise. Part country house mystery, part dystopian. It‘a hard to recommend because so much of it really is a slog, but I *think* I’m glad I persevered. 😅
