The writing style got a lot better from chapter 3 onwards. Now awaiting the plot...

I'm struggling here. Both with the setting as is, as with the writing style.
I can park the setting gripes, but the writing is grating on my soul. Every 6 line paragraph is a mini exposure. It goes like this:
Descriptive scene, action, or fact. Followed by a tell, not show. I'm not a puritan when it comes to the "show, don't tell" principle. But every paragraph has the same rhythm. It's almost poetry 🤔

So far it reads as if Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and Chitty Chitty Bangbang by Ian Flemming had a lovechild.
