The mom in this book is very triggering. I understand she was hurt and is allowed to have emotions but she’s emotionally neglecting her daughter in the process!!!!!!! And she expects her daughter to be mature while acting like a child herself one minute and treating her daughter like she’s a baby the next. So very triggering.

Trying not to DNF, but I read spoilers and this is all heading absolutely nowhere it sounds like.

You ever get the feeling you’re going to be SO disappointed/unsatisfied with a story within the first chapter or two? Yeah that’s where I’m at with this one. So far it’s been hard for me to read emotionally, and if it follows the typical cliches I’m not going to be happy at all with the end because no, just no.

So so fun! I definitely want to read the rest of the series.

I’m in love with this story so far. The two main characters are so endearing and it’s just fantastical enough amid the harsh realism to make it a treat for middle-grade audiences, also to add to the charm and suspense. I am rooting so hard for the characters!

This book becomes more and more obvious that it’s written by a man. The male gaze is strong and there’s plenty of lowkey misogyny (maybe not intentional but those little micro aggressions people don’t think of as misogynistic).

Oh boy here we go with the trash depiction of girls in a book written by a man. I hope it gets better, some lesson is learned along the way, or something because right now I'm side-eying the only girl being a "pretty" blonde whose super power is talking to animals (not invisibility, super speed, projection, or strength like the male characters so far).

Really hope it gets to the BLM stuff soon because so far this is a rough, uncomfortable read. I feel like I’m 12/13 again and not having any voice against the bullies at school and authoritarian parenting at home. Also I’m uncomfortable with some of the victim-blaming that’s happening and hope it serves a good narrative point later! Like she realizes it or something!

I'm having a little bit of trouble getting past some of the clunky dialogue & some aspects that make me think "huh?" EG some of the students talk like they're in the 90s or early '00s, not 2016ish. Also I'm confused why a black girl getting her period at 12 is considered early? I (white) was 11 when I got mine & I teach a lot of 10-11 y/o girls of different cultures who have periods so this is maybe dated in general?

I’ve wanted to read this since I was a wee babe hopelessly jealous of/in love with Kathleen Kelly. And now I finally am! My mission to make this my Kathleen Kelly decade continues!
