Rusha Latif’s Tahrir’s Youth is a rare and extraordinarily valuable English-language account that dismantles Western myths of the 2011 Tahrir uprising as a spontaneous “social media revolution” and instead situates it within decades of resistance, political formation, organizing networks, and Egypt’s ongoing struggle for justice. Powerful.

“Muslims arrived in Europe before Magyar migrants arrived in the Carpathian Basin in the ninth century.” p. 95 This is such a striking historical fact, especially because Kendi raises it in the context of Viktor Orbán’s rhetoric about Hungary as Christian land and Muslims as outsiders threatening Europe. Muslims established a permanent presence in Iberia beginning in 711, more than a century before Magyar in Hungary.

Drayson is at her strongest when tracing the movement of ideas, art, architecture, and knowledge from the Muslim world into Europe, and the book has given me some genuinely fascinating connections to pursue. Unfortunately, her treatment of Islam itself—particularly early Islamic history, Qur’anic terminology, and Islamic law—is often startlingly unreliable, with sweeping generalizations and egregious basic errors.

Omar is seriously a masterful writer. This is objectively amazing writing on the reality of genocide and Palestine.

This is an important book. If you love Loewen, you will love this book, as it covers the whole history of white supremacy in US textbooks and culture. Goes to the cancered hearts of so many of our institutions and a documentary history of systemic and institutional racism, that only the most depraved ignoramus can attempt to deny.

Amazing book. The focus on collective interests of the community in water rights for both the indigenous and Spanish rule periods of California history is interesting when you know that it will contrast sharply with the dominance of corporate interests today eg the Resnicks and their evil ilk.

Such an excellent book, really.
