“No teacher is so effective as a persuasive wife.”

“The love of a husband and wife is the force that welds society together.”

These homilies were written more than 1600 years ago and are as relevant as ever. One of the great gifts of this text is to see the absolute equality of husband and wife even in the earliest days of the church in contrast to the surrounding culture.

This one was deeply fascinating, and I can't wait to both read the rest of the series and watch the Netflix version.

It seemed to go back and forth between narrative elements, flashbacks, and also extended sequences of physics/scientific explanation, which I could just barely keep up with. But it wasn't enough to scare me away, and worth it for the payoff and immersion in the story.

The first half of the book was as mysterious in many ways as anything I'd read. If this book did not have the strong reputation that it does, I probably would have abandoned it.

In the second half it becomes incredible very quickly!

It's deeply fascinating reading about racism in Canada in the 1930s and 40s. I find that media accounts of American segregation so form my conception of racism that it is important to hear stories directly from African-Canadians to better understand their experience and challenges, and the ways it shaped our society.

I’m really enjoy this guilty pleasure, though it’s starting to feel like it would’ve thrived as a novella.
