Every time Marcus talks about crypto and how cool it is, I have to remind myself that this book was published in the 2000s and he’s talking about cryptography, not cryptocurrency, to get my heart rate back down.

Is this book actually dealing with the “misunderstanding of doom” trope head-on, in a timely and reasonable manner? Even though there’s literally magic preventing them from talking?? And there’s bonus character development because of it??? ✨ I AM IN LOVE ✨

I…did not expect this book to be about a child who murders a wild hog so he can fake his own bloody death in order to escape his alcoholic father. Not sure if I’d usually class that as an “adventure”.

There’s a lot of fatphobia in this narration. Hard to tell whether it’s 1980s misogyny that aged poorly, or if we’re supposed to think the narrator is kind of sleazy and unheroic. Or both?

I‘ve read very very little Stephen King, so I don’t know much about his style.

Most impressive thing about Thoreau’s writing so far is how I’m so bored by it and so angry at it at the same time.

I always have a big soft spot for a well-done animal companion story; I just didn’t realize how much I would love a snarky no-nonsense armadillo in that role before now. Even if he does occasionally talk about how delicious insect eggs are.

Agatha Christie’s solution is hilarious and Dorothy Sayers’ is extremely detailed and I just adore them both.
