Very good writer, really great at describing setting and atmosphere. And he is somehow able to mix together a tourist's pleasure of France with a grizzly murder mystery and the grief over the death of a child. Now that takes talent.

Great book so far but kind of off-putting that it suddenly turns into Harry Potter midway through. The school of magic, the kindly and wise head Master and the nasty black-robed teacher who is out to get him etc. I am waiting for Ron and Hermione to appear any minute... Why do this when he had such an original thing going?

I am reading Dostoevsky (and Chekhov) for the first time this year and am in awe. So glad I made the effort. But does anybody besides me wonder if EVERYONE in imperial Russia ran around hysterically, behaving as if they had borderline personality disorder? (Impulsive, excessively emotional, overly dramatic and with a tendency toward self harm etc.) LOL
