Peter Brown’s prose is almost effortlessly beautiful. He should write every book.

I skipped this chapter initially. I wasn't ready.

Martin's losing efforts against alcohol abuse and suicide have stripped him of his legal and moral responsibilities as a father.
All men ought to fear this end.
I admit I'm not the father I wanted/hoped/predicted I'd be, but the fear of Martin's calamity haunts me. How does one navigate up while the sound of his shackles reverberate from below?

Ironically, the best chapter thus far is the chapter most criticized in The Atlantic review. Martin clearly develops his thesis within this chapter, adding layers while using famous authors and their suicides in order to elucidate his point. The concept of doubling. The suicidal is both victim and murderer. The same is true for everyone, suicide is just an extreme example. We are always our own harshest critic.

Klosterman taking a moment to be insightful:

He's saying how can generation X who despised advertising find authenticity when they grew up watching advertisements, the opposite of authenticity.

Which has ultimately led to the current generation that misunderstands authenticity and finds it necessary to label themselves as a brand. Literally turning themselves into an advertisement.
