I just don’t like the way he writes.

I just don’t like how this guy writes, overexplaining everything characters think and feel, and at the same time all mysterious like there is some big secret and then it’s a complete anticlimax at the end

It reads so quickly. Also how is it that he can write with so much understanding about women and racism towards Chinese people, but then write such racist lines about indigenous people?

Blatant racism on one of the first pages but he, it’s John Steinbeck right…?
Other than that it reads very modern and quick, and I’m immediately sucked into the characters and world.

Well, chapter XV of part 7. I get it now. This man can write. And this man is wise. He understands human nature. He understands men, their supressed emotions, the things that women still don’t understand today. And I guess he is lovingly writing about his younger self.

I wonder how Tolstoy had all this wisdom, he hadn’t been married that long when he wrote this?
Funny to read that we still fight about the same things, men and women, back then or now, nobility or not, Russia or Europe.

I do like Levin. He’s a little ridiculous, but I like Tolstoy for writing him that way.

I’m sorry but a couple of these chapters were pretty bad

Part 4 got much more interesting. Although I’m realizing how much I care about characters and their inner thoughts. I like to be in close contact with them. Only seeing their movements from a distance doesn’t do it for me. There are no small ordinary moments, nothing to reveal their true character.

Decided to read the introduction and some more reviews. Think I have a more realistic expectation now. Levin is a little rediculous to me, constantly contradicting himself, thinking way too much of his own thoughts. I thought that was the point, but Levin is voicing Tolstoys thoughts and is supposed to resemble him, oops.

Simultaneously into it and kinda bored

It got a bit boring. It’s barely about Anna? And what’s with all the stuff about farming and horses? I don’t mind yet but hopefully it picks up soon

Part one finished - did not expect this to read so quickly and feel so modern? So far also admiring Tolstoys insight into women and girls. They have personality and agency, they feel real and like he respects them.
