Why wouldn’t Elm have just taken out his brother and Linden when he had a chance? Or at a minimum have made sure to take all of their cards? He had the ability to freeze all those people and he could have cleared up what was happening, but instead decided to bolt which is only gonna make everything worse. Very frustrating.

Note to check later in the series: was magic available in skulls bay or the red wastes?

On the reread, Rowan‘s early behavior seems so much worse. 🤦‍♀️

Annoying overuse of a random word: hearth

Used 25 times in each book of this duology. Not doing audio for book 2 but forever scarred by the narrator who throughout book one read it as “herth”.

The mispronunciation of hearth in the audiobook is a little annoying.

Smut scene is very porn-y. “Cramming” made me recoil.

An ironic point for me to be annoyed by the constant use of “Fuck”. I’m not one to complain about language use but it’s the context here and the way the audiobook narrator pronounces it.

Correction just written by the same author. Different narrator, though one I have heard on many other audiobooks.

Was thinking this story was feeling extremely similar to a touch of darkness and then I realized it was written (and narrated) by the same people.

Ok getting a little annoyed that every side character has a different pet name for the FMC. “Babes, baby girl, Lilly Billy, etc”

As an atheist living in the south and a lover of the handmaid’s Tale, the initial set up for the story was already just checking my boxes. But the guy on the corner screaming that this is all a simulation has officially piqued my interest.

Holy jump scare on the male POV chapter. I knew that it was coming, but the voice actor is so drastically different from the female version that has narrated the entire book

Is there anyone in this series with the ability to assess and think rationally under any kind of stress?

Every “rawr” in the audiobook makes me so uncomfortable

Also, absolutely none of the twists in this book so far are original or surprising.

How are there only two smart scenes in this book and both of them are progressively cringier? Does the writer want to make us uncomfortable? Was this secretly written by a man? Would a really good orgasm get this girl to stop asking questions in the middle of sex?

My whole face just contorted with disgust from the cringe. Yuck.

How is this author a romance writer?

No buildup of any kind beforehand?

A WEEK?! God I hate this book. If I wasn’t having so much fun rage reading/annotating…

Are you kidding with the abrupt chapter endings? Not even a pretense (like an interruption)for them to stop/run away from each other. Just one of them decides they are randomly done with the situation, so they leave and the other one doesn’t say or do anything?

Finally get some good reveals, and the predictable plot twist is announced, but then the chapter/conversation just abruptly ends for no reason. Ugh.

Somehow both too much subtext and no subtext at the same time.

I know it’s normal for the princess who gets taken against her will to have prejudices against the other group of people in these stories, but this chick is just straight up hateful for no reason
