Years ago I basked in Calvin's elegant, uplifting language in a volume of *The Institutes* I'd picked up, and when I spied this on my home bookshelf, I added it to my bedtime reading stack. But I discovered just a collection of aphorisms, moralisms, suffocating legalism, Why? Someone has just gleaned the "maxims" out of Calvin, and that's a shame.

Nice atmosphere, solid writing, intriguing mystery!

Lots of fun with interesting character development and plot intrigues.

Lorrie Moore's "People Like That . . ." is by far the best story I've read so far, but I am just now starting O'Connor's "Revelation," which has its own awful charms.

This is fun so far, but I had to take a long break while my Kindle was in the custody of American Airlines! Will resume soon . . .

(85)

About 2/3 through I had to skip to the end, pretty predictable. It was just about three times as long as it needed to be, and too self-satisfiedly preachy. Too bad!

This was a beautiful movie, and I'm hoping I enjoy the book, too!
