I always liked Michener's writing - very educational AND entertaining. Since this takes place in Afghanistan it covers Muslim beliefs, customs of the country, culture, etc. even though it takes place after WWII. The main character is Jewish(keeps it a secret) embassy worker and is confronted with traveling with a Nazi doctor refugee, an American young woman who marries a native then runs away with a caravan -
