10 min 221-230 I think Junior had his favorite moments w/ Rowdy. Reasons are they share a passion, and that is basketball. At the end of the book, they played one on one for hours which means that they don't want to leave and want to relive the old times. Rowdy said that Junior was the nomadic one in the rez, he was saying that he was different from other people and will travel the world unlike others from the rez.

I think the reason why Junior can adapt to the Reardan society is that he made a lot of friends there are people who feel compassion for him. He knows that there are other people who have experiences and lives the same as him. For example, there are people who are poor, cartoonists, etc. like him. This is probably why he found friends that are nice to him.

144-209 I think the author purposely tries to make Junior be one of the most unluckiest people. Ex. By writing that his sister and grandmother died, and both were related to alchohol. I think many people in the rez gave up on their lives because they never went to collage or find a well-payed job. This is probably why a majority of the people are drunk. Junior had to live in this environment for his whole life.

118-144 I think one of the social issues in this book is identity because Junior is living in two vastly different towns. One, where the society is poor, drunk, and full of Indian, while the other one is more middle class and full of whites. Both the societies are somewhat bringing him down because the Indian reservation calls him a betrayer for going to a white town, and Reardan, where many people discriminated him.

98-118 25 min I think that the reason why the teachers and people started to pay more attention to Junior is because he and Penelope are dating. Since Penelope is popular and smart, Junior started to fit in because she convinced her friends that he is actually pretty hot. I don't think they are actually dating, but Penelope feeling sad for him, so she decided to get close to him.

78-98 I think that it was a good idea that Junior's sister married someone because she could start a new life and be active. Before, she wanted to be a romantic novelist, but decided to give up on her dreams and stayed in the basement of her house for her whole life. Until, she married that man which made her want to apply for a job, meet with new people, and live a happier life.

44-78 30 min I think that Penelope acts nice to Junior during Halloween and really rude at school because her friends might have a negative view of him and she was trying to fit in with them. However, when nobody was with her at Halloween, she acts nice because nobody will tease her about hanging out with an Indian.

9-44 30 min I think that Mr. P is trying to give Junior a chance to become someone great. He got let down and battled all his life. From the brain surgeries to the constant bullying, he still kept on going and Mr. P sees in Junior hope for a better future and not become his whole family such as his sister, who got the chance to become a writer but didn't because of her surrounding environment in the rez.

5 min I think that the social issue in this book is bullying and fitting in. Because of his large head and feet and his disability, people at the rez teased him because of it. This is hard for him to fit in because everyone is letting him down and excluding him.

111-128 After finishing this book, I think that the social issue in this book is environment and refugees. In South Sudan, it is very difficult to get water because some people have to walk about half a day to the nearest water source. Also, because there is war is Sudan, Salva had to move away and find the nearest refugee camp which is in Ethiopia and took months to get there.

30 min 83-111 I think Salva adapted to the American environment pretty slow because of the drastically different seasons, culture, and development. For example, there is winter, and South Sudan's lowest temperatures are about 70 degrees. He has to learn a totally different language, English. Also, there the cost of living in America is much higher than South Sudan, too.

30 min I think that the boss of the drilling in Nya's perspective is actually Salva because they were both leaders of something. Because he lacked water, it is also possible that he wants to provide other communities with water. Also the author kind of repeated a phrase in both the perspectives. "Salva would talk to them, encourage them, coax and persuade them. Once in while he had to speak sternly or even shout.

39-65 I think an issue in this book is the environment against man because the reason why the main characters is struggling because they lacked clean water to continue their life.

0-39 15 min I think Salva was very adventurous and brave traveling east with only Uncle and Martial. Luckily because Uncle is there, he can hunt and give them food because when they are the deer, the book said that she was very hungry and nearly starved to death.

40 min 343-369 The author adds a lot of descriptive and poetic features to make the story more interesting. Also, the way she had written the dialogue was very deep and makes me think about what the author really means. I think that Day and June is starting their new life together again because, after Day's surgery, he couldn't remember her, but after awhile, he found one part of his memory that disappeared.

30 min. 317-343 When Day was lying on the floor, I think that he became unconscious for a minute because he could talk and see his mother floating in the sky. However, I noticed that he didn't seem to know who June was because he said in the book, "There's a girl crouched over me, her hands on my face." Maybe he only remembers the things that have been important to him for a long time.

294-317 30 min I liked how the author slowed down the action a lot after Day told that they should fight against the Colonies at the last part of his speech. Also, I liked how he added more problems into the mix to increase the tension like Day's severe headaches while he was hanging on the window ledge and the airship was about to fall.

274-294 30 min I have an inference that the Chancellor might've found out about the bombs, so he purposely decided to let Day speak at the Air Base. This might be a possibility because Commander Jameson knows about the military system of the Republic, so she might've found out about the bombs that the Patriots had set and reported it to the Chancellor.

30 min. 253-274 I think the reason why Day vandalized the city with words such as 'listen to me' is because it might give the people of the Republic a clue about what is going to happen without giving it away to the Colonies. Also, I think the cure originated partially from John or Day because they lived together, and the plague might've been passed on to Eden and they got cured.

After Commander Jameson tried to capture June, Day was very mad that the Republic didn't take as good care of her. This shows that he has very strong feelings with June and wants to keep her as safe as possible. Also, I think Day's plan is going to work because he knows that the people in the Republic love him and will follow what he says for the better good.

315-344 One theme of this book might be doing the right thing is better than doing what is told. For example, Kretzky did the right thing and rather than following the NKVD's orders to stay, he told the inspector about the working conditions that they faced and he released the surviving people back to their home. Also, the right thing for Lina to do was to feed others her ration, instead of eating all of her own.

296-315 20 min I feel really sad that Mother had given it all to help others as much as she could, but her result was a slow and painful death. I think she decided to give up on her life because she heard from Kostas that her husband died, and there is no hope left.

233-296 90 min I have a prediction that Mother might die because the book shows how she got weak and sick on the way to the North Pole. The reason why it happens is because she keeps giving Lina and Jonas a part of her bread rations. This shows that Mother is a considerate and loving person that helps others often. The bread symbolizes life because and I think Mother is giving part of her lasting life to her kids.

191-233 60 min I think the theme for this book is what makes you happy isn't your wealth or belongings, but your family and friends. This is because even though everyone was starving, they still celebrated Lina's birthday and still made her happy even without the fancy gifts and parties. Also, even with just the meager food and shelter, they still stayed together and tried to be as happy as possible.

35 min 170-191 I think the letter that Mrs. Rimias received symbolizes hope since before they received any letters, everyone felt hopeless since they had been tortured by the NKVD at the labor camps. However, when the letter came, everyone felt hopeful and happy that their relatives are still alive. This gives them a bit of hope that they will see their loved ones again.

120-170 80 min. I have a book to book connection and that is that in the book Once, Felix saw holes in the ground that is for burying the Jews that the Jews made. This is kind of like this book since Lina and her family has to dig holes in the ground, and lie in there while the NKVDs tried to bury them alive. I think the contract symbolizes the loss of hope because they are giving up their life if agreed to sign it.

217-236 30 min My prediction is that Day might influence everyone in the Republic to join forces and fight against the Colonies, not just the soldiers. In that way, when Day tells the chancellor his decision, it might sound like a surrender but is actually going to become a bigger battle in the future that the Colonies won't be prepared for.

67-88 I think the flashbacks Lina has shows her past memories with what is occurring right now to her. For example, the flashback she had about how nobody could read her signature except her dad is similar to how she is making drawings on the way so her dad will know it's her.

I think the art school that Lina would've gone to if not for the Soviets taking her away symbolizes hopeless because she was so thrilled and happiness when her teacher recommended her to go there, but because of the Soviets taking her away to Russia, there is no hope for her to attend that school.
