Seems like this is promising to be just what "The History of the World Through 6 Glasses" failed at being

After Wordslut I was scared of giving Montell another try. This is one is vastly better, occasionally some of the writing issues I had with wordslut present themselves, but to a much lesser scale

Not loving this one's themes and characters. In Normal People I loved Connel and cared for Marianne, but here, I don't like anyone at all and exploring the state of mind of an affair duo is not my favorite thing, so... eh

Essentially finished and never have I hated Pierce Brown more than after this book. Might be his best work yet

didn't care much for part 1 but part 2 was excellent! More political and character focus instead of just action

Pt 1 was amazing
The start of pt 2 was great, the latter half was somewhat filler? I see how it advances the story but I didn't care much for it.

Pt2 done!

Still can't believe how much better this book has been over its predecessor. The simple fact that the prose and scene-weaving improved has made everything else way more enjoyable (or not as much of a problem). All characters that aren't Rin are somewhat flat, one or two main characteristics but here that doesn't feel like mediocre writing, more like a manifestation of Rin's tunnel vision.

Pt1 done and the contrast to book one is crazy! Kuang's growth as an author is absolutely noticeable, most of my pacing and scene issues of book 1 no longer apply, it feels like everything flows naturally. I enjoy where the story is going, I wasn't sure if a sequel was necessary but it seems quite promising!

Pt 1 done

I really enjoy the Chinese historical and mythological elements that Kuang has incorporated in the novel, makes the setting more real and the cultural and societal ideals more tangible since they can be seen in the real world. Another strength for me is the ever-present serious tone, keeping the plot grounded and the subtle and limited use of the fantasy elements, making them more significant when used

Lyria and Ephraim POV chapters are a bit meh, but I enjoy them as characters.

Darrow's "progress" between MS and here is great! I hate him, but in a good way, he is the worst version of himself and great to follow cause I feel what he feels at every step

Now Lysander! Best part of the book so far, I wasn't expecting him to be so likeable and his POVs to be so enjoyable but his narration is the best, I love it!
