Mama is sad. Her husband has passed away. The son is explaining her mood changes. She cries uncontrollably, etc. Everyone in the family is upset but it seems like Mama gets affected the most. In the text it says, "Your Mama turns into some kind of zombie, walking around aimlessly, in between fits of crying"(1). This shows that Mama is super sad that her husband died.

Hart is lucky. He use to be fortunate, to unfortunate, to lucky again. The concert was coming really soon and they needed to work together to make this concert go well. People use to dislike Hart and not trust him. Now, they do. In the text it says, "They trusted him"(140). This shows that he is lucky that they trust him.

This shows that he is now unlucky and is getting hated on.

Hart is now unfortunate. In the beginning, Hart was always fortunate; getting invited to everyone's parties, goes out every Friday. Now, things have gotten worse. The Holiday Concert is coming up and he's the director. Now since he is the same age as the other kids they think it's unfair. One girl even gets rude with him and calls him a teacher. In the text it says, "You're a teacher!"(109).

Hart is fortunate. Most of the time everything goes his way. His sister on the other hand, not so much. Hart must be good at everything because things just got better for him. In the text it says, "Hart had been elected sixth grade chorus director." This shows that he is fortunate and everything goes his way.

Mr. Meinert is joyful. It's Friday and he doesn't have a class at the moment. He is just lounging around and thinking. All of a sudden a nice and proud comment comes in his mind. In the text it says, "Oh yeah, he thought, I am a great teacher!"(79). This shows that he is proud and happy he had that thought and it made him happy to hear.

Mr. Meinert is happy. He is a chorus teacher and he is use to chaos. He didn't really like this chaos and wanted it to change. One day, the students came in and they were all nervous and tense for some reason. In the text it says, "Mr. Meinert liked it. It was a nice change"(43). This shows that his wish of wanting change worked out after all and he was calm.

Isabel is fearless. Isabel is in the prison to check up on Curzon since he has been captured. Now, one of the guards takes his hat and blanket. Isabel gets angry and starts talking rudely to the guard. In the text it says, "you bloody beast, I swore"(237). This shows that Isabel was mad and wasn't afraid to yell at a white guard.

Hart is popular. Hart is the type of kid that always gets the attention. His sister on the other hand is not. She was complaining about how he's a first picker and someone who gets invited to someones party even though he is a nerd at home. In the text it says, "At school he was Mr.Cool"(4). this shows that he is a center of attention and a popular kid.

This shows that Sarah is jealous of her brother because he gets more attention.

Sarah is jealous. Sarah is Harts sister. She is complaining on how her brother Hart is a first grabber and a popular kid. In the text it says, "Who always had fifteen guys crowding around his table at lunch? Hart. Who got picked first at recess for baseball or dodge ball, even though he wasn't the best player? Hart. And who got invited to everybody's birthday party- at least two invitations each week? Same guy: Hart.

Curzon is nice. Curzon is with Isabel and they are in town. Curzon goes into a store and comes out with two hot rolls oozing with butter and he gives them to Isabel. In the text it says "Figure you'd want to set and and eat a bite".(38) This shows that Curzon is nice and cares about other people even if they were slaves.

Mr.Roberts is greedy. Miss Marry is dying on her deathbed and Mr.Roberts comes to visit but it was not for her. All Mr.Roberts did was take the coins she has away from her. In the text it says, "Miss Mary wasn't even cold on her deathbed when he helped himself to the coins in the strongbox."(4) this shows that he only cares what he wants or needs.

Fleck is caring. Fleck has been taking care of these dogs really well. He makes sure they eat and drink well so they stay healthy. In the text it says, "as fleck has hoped, that they would find a master worth serving (73)." This shows that he cares about their health and their safety

Albina is irritated. Hal has had the dog for 2 days and she already wants to take him back. Everyday Hal says he will clean up after him and Albina looks around the house just to make sure. In the text it says, "She gave a squeak of irritation and reached for the dustpan". This shows that she already regrets having the dog.

Hal's personality has changed a lot. At first, he was angry and sad because he couldn't get a dog but now, he is very happy. In the text it says, "You're disgusting, get away!!!"(10). Now in the middle of the book he is happy. In the text it says, "Downstairs, Albina Fenton heard a shriek of joy from Hal's room." (12) This shows that Hal has changed so far throughout the novel.

Mr. Carker is unhappy. Hal went to the pet shop to get a dog for his birthday. Hal was really interested in one particular dog. Mr. Carker didn't want Hal to buy it because it was a lot of money. In the text it says, "we were just about to take him to the dog show but there was a delay." This shows that he was angry that Hal was going to get the dog and made an excuse.

Albina is mad. Her husband came home from a trip and forgot to get Hal a present. Hal was really upset and his dad went upstairs to cheer him up. Albina heard a shriek of joy from Hal's room. He was so happy because his dad said he can get a dog. In the text it says, "I absolutely not have my house destroyed by an animal!!" This shows she was not happy to get a dog

Hal is unthankful. It's his birthday coming up and all he wanted was a dog. His mom says no because they make messes and destroy the house. When his birthday came his mom got him tons of gifts from a bunch of different places. His mom also ordered a mascot dog to make him happy. In the text it says, "You're disgusting, get away!!". This shows that he is unthankful for everything other than a real dog.

Chase is nice. Even though he is in a difficult time because of the storm, he still tries to be as nice as possible. In the text it said, "Chase saw a sixth-grader with a lo of courage. This shows that he tries to be nice no matter what.

The main conflict for Chase, Nicole, and Rashawn is to get to safety. Since they are in a category 5 storm, it is difficult to get around. It is difficult to get around because of the strong wind and current. Chase said they are closer to safety but it would take 10 times longer. Hopefully they get to safety before it gets worse.

The author uses personification in this part of the story. In the text it says, "the stinging rain". (87). What this personification means is that if rain is so strong that it stings your skin. The reason why I think the author used this figurative language is because in a big storm the rain and wind is so strong that its like hail and it really hurts and stings.

I think the theme is to never be afraid of making change in you life. The reason I think this is because when all of the kids are told they are going to be unwound, they always try to find a way to get out of it. What I think the author is trying to say is change shouldn't feel bad or anything because you can like the change you make. If you don't like it, there can be another way to like it.

What I think is going to happen next is Risa is going to run away like Conner did. The reason I think Risa will runaway is because the headmaster told her she will be unwound. When the people in the office tell her she is being unwound she gets mad and argues. In the text Risa says, " I can be a boeuf. The the military has always needed more boeufs!". This shows that Risa will give up anything to not be unwound.

What I think will happen next is Conner will find another way to escape again

Josias Aldridge is kind. He finds Conner in the back of his truck and Conner begs Josias to let him stay. Luckily for Conner, Josias says yes. In the text it says, " You are lucky you came to me. The other truckers will take what you offer and turn you in." In the end , Josias gets arrested for taking him and Conner gets caught. This shows that Josias risked himself to help others.

This shows that he goes out of his way to try to help others.

Chase is risky. When Chase, Nicole, and Rashawn were on the bus after it crashed, they needed to escaped but the bus driver was passed out on the bus. The problem was that the bus flew into a river and they were sinking. Chase says " You and Rashawn go through the emergency door and get to shore (74). After the girls left the bus was almost filled with water. Chase took all of his breath to try to save the driver.

In the text it said "That's my parents car. (pg. 30). This shows that even though his mom and sister died, he can still stay positive and not always be negative.

Chase is brave. In the beginning when Chase was talking to Momma Rossi and Nicole, he had a flashback. The flashback was about when his mom didn't come to pick him up from boy scouts. The leader insisted on taking him home so he did. When they were coming down the hill there was a lot of traffic because there was a car accident. when he got to see the accident it was his moms car.
