“I don’t want your money,” [Marie] said, placing the weapon on the bedside table.
“What do you mean?”
She turned and walked back to the armchair, turning again to look at [Jason] as she sat down. “I think I want to help you.”
“Now wait a minute—”
"Please,” she interrupted. “Please don’t ask me any questions. Don’t say anything for a while.”

Going back to where it all started! I found this book in my local library when I was really young (maybe 13 or 14?), but they only had this one which was number 4 of the series. I became obsessed with Zenta and Matsuzo pretty much from that point on, and this book in particular really shaped a lot of my early thoughts and ideas.

"I'm not accusing you of anything, [Zenta]," Hambei said. "I'm merely pointing out that when you are around, things happen. Doors pop out of their frames, saddles slip from horses' backs, and helmets fly from people's heads. Wasn't that a naked monk I just saw? Don't tell me you weren't responsible!"

(Actually the naked monk part was all Zenta was responsible for this time)

“Is anyone going to tell us why we just walked out of Battle Brief?” Cat asks, a few steps behind me.
“Violet has a look in her eyes,” Rhiannon explains, keeping up at my side.
“The same one she had before the Squad Battle last year,” Sawyer says.
“She’s onto something, and from our experience, you just roll with it,” Rhiannon finishes.

“Aren’t you going to tell me how brilliant that idea was?”
Tairn scoffs. “I chose you last year for that brilliance, and now you’d like to be congratulated like it’s something new? How odd.”
“You’re impossible to impress.”
“I’m a dragon, a Black Morningstartail. The descendent of—”
“Yeah, yeah.” I cut him off before he makes me recite his entire lineage.

Tairn quickly locates [our squad], and riders scurry as he drops to an abrupt landing.
“You could have crushed someone,” I lecture.
“Could have, but alas, they moved.”

“Nevertheless, I’ll be staying,” Kaori retorts. “Power must always be kept in check, don’t you think, Major Varrish?”
“Are you accusing me of abusing my power where this cadet is concerned, Colonel Kaori?” Varrish moves to step toward us, but my bag is in the way.
“Oh, no.” Kaori shakes his head. “I think you abuse your power in general.”

“He’s a Riorson,” [Mira] says. “You shouldn’t trust him, either.”
“I don’t.” I look away after the whispered confession.
“But you’re in love with him.” She heaves a frustrated sigh and throws a dagger. “That’s… I don’t even know what that is, but ‘unhealthy’ is the first word that comes to mind.”

I swing my small pack onto my back, then place one of the heavier packs on each of my shoulders. “I can’t believe you allowed someone up here to secure the bags, [Tairn]. I’m impressed with your restraint.”
“The section leader attached the bags to the saddle before I put it on, naturally.”
“And here I was thinking you’d evolved.”

“You’re a Sorrengail, aren’t you?” Mirabel asks. “The commanding general’s daughter?” She winces. “The hair kind of gives you away.”
“Yes.” There’s no use denying it.
“Your mother is terrifying,” she whispers. [...]
I nod. “That’s one of her more prominent qualities.”

And to think, at one point in my life, I’d thought climbing [the Archives'] ladders would be the scariest thing I’d ever do.
Now, I’m simply existing with the ever-present danger of Vice Commandant Varrish, Aetos’s threat hanging over my head, a secret revolution that could get us all killed at any moment, and now imminent torture from RSC. Kind of miss the ladders.

My cheeks are flaming hot as I lift the backs of my hands to my skin.
"See, I told you.” Carr lifts the notebook. “The last lightning wielder said it made them overheat. Now do it again.”
Tairn chortles.
"Not a single fucking word out of you,” I warn.
