If there's two things I've learned about Washington so far, it's that he really did not like the public attention, and he had REALLY BAD teeth.

It’s funny what a good night’s sleep can do. One chapter and I’m won over by Professor Bhaer.

I can tell this book is about to break my heart and I’m dreading it terribly.

“Fantasy is not faith. But when we exercise the muscle of imagining what we can’t see, we’re also strengthening the part of our mind that can perceive God exists and that he can do extraordinary, miraculous things.”

“The more we invest in seeing the unseen, the more we can conceive of the greatness of God and all he can accomplish.”

“Yet you told him to go, mother, and didn’t cry when he went, and never complain now, or seem as if you needed any help,” said Jo, wondering.

“I gave my best to the country I love, and kept my tears till he was gone. Why should I complain, when we both have merely done our duty, and will surely be the happier for it in the end?”

Bleh to DNF or not to DNF. As far as I’ve made it in the book, these two have just been awkwardly comfortable with each other not really thinking about romance. For Decades! Other serious relationships have not been discussed so I just assume they’re non-existent. How are they here at 40? This author writes older romances, but this trope is a stretch here.

Enjoying the audiobook while building my Lego! But I’m also reminded why best friends is not my favorite trope. How did these people make it decades without ever considering their feelings for each other in a romantic way?

Finally, with about 90 pages to go, this book started to hold my interest.

Lots of suspects. Lots of train times. Lots of towns. Lots of policemen. Lots of bikes. It’s tedious and a bit much to try to keep track of. Oh, and lots of Scottish dialect which at times is difficult to manage. Because it’s Dorothy L. Sayers I’m going to stick it out..
