I needed something to distract me from some unpleasant but necessary tasks. From the second page I could not put this book down, wanting to find out what happens next to Meena (Aminata). There is much brutality and darkness in this book, but it is a part of the story that must be told. Lawrence Hill’s writing is amazing and he has a way of making you feel what the experiences were like through Meena’s eyes.
