I finished the first novel in this set of four, and the one for which I bought this volume. This was my first experience with O'Hara and I found his style refreshingly direct. He has a great knack for realistic internal monologue and for giving his characters believable voices. I'm nearly ashamed to admit that I did have to look up the reference for his title Appointment in Samarra, but it is so appropriate!

Just finished "Arrowsmith." Funny that the protagonist of a novel published in 1925 is lamenting the focus on money in medicine, the rush of doctors to become specialists at the expense of primary care, and the habit of pharma being more concerned about profits than patient outcomes. Makes me realize that our current situation has been a slow onset train wreck and not a modern problem. Breaking from Lewis...
