really enjoying this - not like anything I've experienced - stories are fables - retold - but just wonderfully edgy and unexpected and great sentences you can't predict the direction (end point) of. I moved away from "Old God's Time" to immerse in this.

Very nice so far - McGuane captures people who work and play outdoors, their speech patterns and viewpoint quietly and precisely...I love the writing in these stories!

One of the most original - in parts, difficult ( for me to grasp his thinking) - books I've read

Paul is reading Song of the Departed: Selected Poems of Georg Trakl
Many themes repeat - descriptive tropes in some cases become tiresome - but the deeply felt melancholia that pervades these poems is often beautifully expressed

Mid-way in this one now - very interesting concept and approach - the version I have is actually: "Time / No Time - The paradox of poetry and physics"
Argument is wide ranging, comparing time-based (Hawking), quantum & string theory (multiverse) and shape-based universe theories with ideas of Parmenides and findings in neuropsychology....so, a light read!

my son gave this to me last year & I'm meandering through it - very much enjoying it as well... "...alone in the bee-loud glen"

I've recently decided to come back to this huge collection and keep motoring through story by story - I quit about a year ago just cause I got downhearted about the size of it....but feeling a bit more energetic (today anyway)

gave up about 1/2 way into the 3rd chapter...don't know what it was, but it just didn't grab me for some reason.....
