UPDATE: I'm enjoying the book more than I was initially. I made a change in my own attitude and reading style... no hurrying, impatience and distractions. This book requires concentration and a slow appreciation. Also, Part II is more relationship/people oriented and I liked the human element unfolding.

The author did a tremendous amount of research. I appreciate her rigor, however, the detail of her prose - the minutia - is bogging me down. Perhaps I don't have the attention span I used to have. I want the story to unfold faster and don't like the long passages about the route he takes in his travels.. THE ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES and OUT OF AFRICA were more enjoyable because of the focus on the human element
