I bought this book as a teenager, during my Point faze :'), but never got around to reading it. And it's not that bad. A comfortable, interesting fantasy plot, featuring a lot of strong female characters, including the heroine. The only negatives are occasional misogynistic comments from some of the male characters and the slightly naive way animals are meant to interact, but, hey, it's fantasy! A pretty fun romp.

This book is full of nuggets of curious thought-provoking information on how the English language came to be, which I wish I had the memory to retain. This has to be one of my favourites: "the word roundabout... is of American origin... before Smith came along, traffic circles in Britain were called gyratory circles." Oh, to reprogram my SatNav to say, "go right at the gyratory circus, third exit".
