Okay, yeah. She needs to shut up about slavery right now.

"Slaves. There was no other word for what they were." How about human? I don't know if I trust this author to have this conversation. And by I don't know I mean I don't. Her heart's in the right place, but no. Luckily I assume that she will leave this area where there are these enslaved black people and never return after the scene. 🙃

There is no consistency. One second it's her mom who hates change and her aunt who loves it because she's afraid of things staying the same. That was like the whole story actually. Now all of the sudden her aunt was afraid of change? Then why exactly did she always need to go to a new country? Why did she quit her dream job after one success? Why did she run away from a relationship with Vera? Am I crazy??

Her quitting her job is the weirdest rich girl twist this book could throw. She literally has a great job and work/life balance! She travels extensively on vacation every year! She works with her best friends and takes long lunches! She loves, works with, and gets free books! She acts like she hasn't been able to live her life because she's such a grinder. This girl does not know grind!

I like how she thinks people would think she's a "child of chaos" because her passport is full of stamps. Honey. People will just know you grew up rich.

The way this writer so clearly has no respect non pastoral or evangelical Quakers is soo obvious. I don't know why I keep being surprised.

Kind of doubting if I should be reading this at this point. Before, it was just clear bias, now I'm catching straight up historical errors and misleadings. Again, this man became president of a college??

The way this man just shat on liberal Quakers as "children" for having the audacity for believing that the Bible wasn't the end all be all of being a good person and a Quaker is INSANE. Especially since he admits that was the common Quaker belief at the time, but that they "failed to understand" things because Quakerism had fallen to such a "low state". The fact the author became the president of a college is crazy

The way my jaw just dropped when a list of early Quaker leaders only included men and didn't even include James Naylor. 4 men get paragraphs (besides Fox) & then a no context list that has one woman: Margaret Fell. I've only ever read books on Quakerism that were either my branch or academic and not affiliated with any branch. It's crazy how full of bias this book is and how different the religion is portrayed! Wild.

I really hope this isn't another story of a power hungry woman and terrible mother. At least Hatshepsut's reign is portrayed as the success it was. Somehow this is the case even though she presents as petty and insecure. Since it's so early on, I'm hoping things will be elaborated to show her in a better light
