I'm reading a version of this published in the US. Although it's clear the book is set in the UK, the publisher has decided to localize it (partially) for the US. For example the currency symbol used is the dollar sign. At one point a character calls the police using 911 but the verbal exchange is clearly one for 999. It's weird. Why not leave in all the British stuff?

The FMC running from crazed coworkers and wild animals in business casual is killing me. Why wouldn't she pack a pair of pants and sneakers at least? Makes no sense.

We FINALLY find out what happened between Waylon and Fletcher 3 years ago that has caused her to hate him so much. And it was nothing. It's just her making wild assumptions about Waylon based on tabloids. There is no basis for her to hate him nor for her to believe he hates her.

Omg! This book is so dumb! The author is just throwing things at the walls to see what will stick. I don't think I've ever read a book that made so little sense.

250 pages in and not a HINT of a coherent plot. Honestly, at this point I'm just reading to see if one ever emerges. I'm giving it a 40% chance of improving from this big ball of bad banter and ridiculous violence.

40% in and this book is astoundingly nonsensical. Nothing is explained. The FMC is surprisingly uncurious based on the tidbits the MMC is dropping. There is a "quest" that doesn't make a lick of sense. The book is told in a series of repetitive scenes that consist of the FMC being angry and lustful and the MMC being arrogant and lustful. Surely something interesting will happen soon.

It's been a long time since I've read a John Steinbeck novel. His writing is evocative. Even though it's written in third person, the characters feel close. I am enjoying it even though occasionally I run across a problematic turn of phrase or word that is no longer used. Still his observations on human nature are astute. Thwre was an observation about timid men and their treatment of women that was spot on.

The author has decided not to explain anything and not have the FMC ask obvious questions like why the emperor is trying to take her back to his kingdom? Just no curiosity whatsoever.
I assume it supposed to be a big reveal or plot twist later but this is not the way. It just feels lazy and she's leaving out critical information.

This book is COMPLETELY nonsensical at the point. Nothing has been explained: the magic, the politics, the war. The FMC has been given a "quest" that makes no sense. And there is (as always) an over-abundance of parentheticals and strike-through text.

I am mildly irritated with the FMC. She is being irrational in her hate of the MMC. She's also not taking the situation seriously after she's seen two different people kill coworkers. But this is a fast read and it's kind of fun.

Now this is dark academia. Full of descriptive, slightly pretentious writing, and people dedicated to academia to the exclusion of good sense. I hate how the dark academia genre has been applied to any book that takes place in a school setting. These characters are making poor decisions but each decision seems rational as they are making it.

Almost 400 pages in and it feels like nothing has happened. The real stakes haven't happened yet. It feels like its building to a big "reveal" or "twist". But I have little to no investment in the characters other than Yuriel. Why is Aurelie so willing to believe that demons don't want to be demons? 120 pages left and I'm mostly bored.

What's going on here? Is this a budding love triangle or a thruple?

I don't know why we are getting a POV from Ilaria. I'm gonna need the author to start tying things together because her storyline is much less compelling than that of Aurelie.

I am 240 pages in and it feels like the story still hasn't started. Not much has happened beyond what is described in the synopsis. This book is SLOW.
