Criticism is a profession which allows one a certain license to be vicious outside the bounds of normal civilized behavior.... There is no profession more ignoble than that of the critic - except perhaps that of the physician presiding at an execution.

So far many of the stories are amazing in their describing details of times past - this is after all a compilation of 19th Century authors. There is some humor, though dark as it may be at times,because some authors have the criminal in the same room as the police, but the police do not realize it. Too much to describe with the various authors but definite enjoyment to be had by reading.
