There are some cliches here but then this book is very entertaining. Perhaps because it doesn't pretend to be what it's not. Perhaps because it enjoys what little it's doing in all honesty and clarity.

Anjum is obviously going to be a memorable character.

This isn't very engaging in all honesty. I keep comparing it with Babel and it fails on many accounts.

This is the third time I'm reading this utterly sad tale. And somehow it always turns out to be even sadder with each reading experience. I keep imagining what I'd feel when I pick this book up again at say 70 or 80, when life would've unfolded every misery it had in stock for me, and I'd still cry for Tess!

I keep thinking about "Modern Pyar"!

Collins was supposed to be tall? And the two most famous adaptations deliberately portrayed him short. Why!? That's not very nice, likening short height with a presumably disagreeable character. I mean I'll bring in the entire rage of colourism and bodily disfigurement here!
