Why do I care for these characters from pre-Victorian England of provincial towns? I don't know, but I do. Probably because Eliot has brought out their struggles, motivations and characters so well that you end up caring. The first few chapters were difficult but once I got through them I am unable to stop. I certainly find it better than Emma (Austen), so far.

It's very well written and so very engaging. On some arguments here and there I am less convinced but other than that I can see the general thrust of it. Continuing to read on till the very end for sure.

This one seems to be going on and on. I don't even care anymore who the killer is.

I thought I would reread a classic. It turned out that what I had read as a child was a much simplified and abridged version, nowhere near the 1300 pages I am trudging through (thankfully on my kindle) now. But despite that I cannot stop reading it and every available hour has been dedicated to reading this excellent, exciting and very satisfying (for there is revenge to be had) book.

This is the second book I am reading this month where train schedules play an important role in the story. Aside that, there is a lot about establishing alibis, random witnesses sighting events and creation of atmosphere (use of scottish accent). And then there are the bicycles.

On the home stretch now, I have persisted with mixed rewards but am eager to see how it ends. Volume 1 was most irritating but Volume 3 is showing it had to be that way and the author was aiming precisely for that kind of emotion and feeling towards the main character in Volume 1, making it more agreeable in Volume 2 which I enjoyed better, to bring a 180 degree transformation (?) I am guessing by the end.

Chapter after chapter is an indictment of the way the Indian government has been suppressing, discrediting and ignoring data and weakening agencies that produce them. No doubt there are always challenges in the way data is collected, there is no perfect methodology but that's no reason to completely stop collecting any credible data at all.

Written in the days when 'nigger' and 'jap' were used by Americans with such frequency as 'people with small eyes' and 'people with too many children' is used by our esteemed leaders today.
