Extremely well written and extapolatable to other times, places and (real) characters. The humour is inherent and really humorous without which this could have been a very serious book because the central historic incidents are not in the least funny and would not have been for the people who lived through it. That's why humour is an essential device to make it all bearable.

A difficult book to get through, not because of the language which is perfectly lucid flowing prose but the content, that's heart rending. While it pulls you right in the middle from the very first page, like the author says in her foreword, it gets progressively difficult as the central premise slowly comes in sharper focus with more horrid details.
