I had forgotten how good the Lew Archer novels are. Read this one, maybe 40 years ago. Was again impressed.

It was fine. I get that all the digressions were designed to show the community, but ultimately I got tired to so many backstories and new characters. The attempt at a bit of magical realism fell flat---what was the point of it? some of the writing was overwrought, particularly as characters were dying. Why the need for the flash forwards?

I checked my iPod---I'm on chapter 17 of 37. Really? And Raquel has obsessed about her boyfriend and has gotten her dream internship but hasn't done much else, not even encountered the story of Anita de Monte. Who is now a ghost, taking the form of a bat. Not sure about the paranormal/magical realism stuff. We'll see if I stick with it, but it is rapidly losing me. Cardboard characters, slooow story......

thought provoking book about the cost and toll of war

good book about a kick-ass woman.

I loved this book, with its evocation of the San Francisco of the teens and 20s of the 20th century & its echoes of today.
