Truly great sci-fi is prescient of the future, but is really a thinly veiled mirror of the present. Somehow Vinge (in True Names) managed to be a mirror of the society we're in in 2018, back when he wrote it in 1980. He covers The Singularity, fluid identities and digital Transcendence all in one story.
