In my reading I chanced upon a passage that was quoted by Montaigne in his Essays in the original Latin: "Sicut aquae tremulum labris ubi lumem ahenis sole repercussum, aut radiantis imagine Lunae omnia pervolitat late loca, iamque sub aurus erigitur, summique ferit laquearia tecti."
This roughly translates to "as unstill water reflects beams of the sun or moon in all directions," describing a state of mind.
