Die fmc erklärt ihrem Love Interest gerade in einer romantischen Szene seitenlang den Plot von Twilight. Ist das Satire??

Das klingt so "old school" (positiv gemeint), dass ich es einfach ausprobieren muss. Die deutschsprachige Romantasy holt mich im Moment null ab, dabei crave ich das Genre seit einiger Zeit total.

Es gibt eine Figur namens Queenie, die aus den 1920er Jahren stammt, sowie ein altes Tagebuch, in das Julina Fragen schreibt, und die Antworten des ehemaligen Besitzers erscheinen dann darunter.

Dass das Buch mir nicht so gut gefällt ist das eine, aber diese "Anleihen" aus dem HP-Franchise sind schon sehr dreist.

Komplett unnormal: Die Kinder, weil sie Literaturklassiker lesen.
Normal für die Heldin: Sie kriegt keinen Schlüssel zum Haus und die Gastgebenden reagieren "wütend und traurig", wenn sie mal ins Dorf fährt.

Alle ca. 20% von mir, die britisch sind, fühlen sich bei den Beschreibungen "britischer Verhältnisse" in diesem Buch beleidigt.

Wie die Kinder an sich vollkommen normal sind, wenn vielleicht etwas gebildeter als andere Kinder (was bei den Kindern reicher Briten jetzt nicht ungewöhnlich ist) und für Julina ist das ein Beweis, dass etwas mit dem Haus nicht stimmt, weil die Kinder sich ja so "unnormal" verhalten. Ich werde delulu.

I loved these as a teenager and every spooky season I re-read at least one. The y2k vibes are immaculate and also as a 12-year-old I didn't clock that this is set in my home city, lol.

When the author tries to make the main character likable so hard that you end up really disliking him ...

This is ... not good. Mostly it's because it wants to be a horror but it's written in this specific RomCom Heroine Voice and it doesn't work. Like, you can't write "The lights flickered. It reminded me of a dumb horror movie!" and expect me to actually find that scary.

This is so funny and sweet but I wish it wasn't so repetitive. A lot of the dialogue is Owen discussing the same problems with different characters and I don't feel like he's growing at all.

Props though for not making this a dual POV romance because I hate those and I think it always adds to a romance when we only see one person's side and the other stays a bit of a mystery.

This is going downhill fast. The haunting is not exciting, the writing feels uninspired and I think the characters could have been interesting, especially Archer and Éabha, but there is some disconnect.

For now it's aggressively mid, let's see if the second half is better.

I've always wanted to read a Mason Deaver book and this one is set on a cruise ship so of course.

Why are all these modern gothic novels so literal?! Describe The Other to me, show me *why* the character feels that way, oh my god. You can't just basically say: "This is that popular Gothic trope, by the way" and expect me to feel anything but bored.

Is it bad that I'm enjoying this for being kind of horrible.

Once again, this would have worked better if the characters were a bit older but it's fun so far.
