Spanish and Portuguese sea power of the 1490s - 1590s really isn't this guy's speciality...the Portuguese first mapped the African coast and managed to keep the info out of other Europeans hands or they wouldn't nec have the monopoly to get to Asia...

'"Kings." Pyktis shuddered. "For so long I was told they were wondrous fathers, farsighted rulers touched by the divine. The natural rule of strength, of crown, of throne - a noble thing, unlike the Empire, so unnatural and invented. But when I looked upon my father, I saw they are just...men. Little men with muddy, ugly little minds, who fall to common corruptions just like anyone." '

Forgiveness, which takes you back to the person you were and lets you reset them. Hope, which exists in a future in which you are new. Forgiveness and hope are miracles. They let you change your life. They are time-travel.

Fact Check (a pox on sloppy Editors): Passover the holiday celebrates the end of slavery in Egypt and departure of the liberated Hebrews towards the Holy Land. The Passover symbol is the lamb shank used to paint lamb's blood on the Hebrew's door to keep the Angel of Death from killing their 1st born...the book is wrong, idk if the poem it pulled from is too.

Pages 306 and 309 demonstrate the author likely has limited knowledge of US history. I feel like a fact checker or 2 could have helped...like no Texas didn't get stolen from Mexico as a result of the Mexican-American War and NO we don't call it the Mexican War. GAH.

Bit of an odd way to put this..."an expression of confidence in the survival of the Indian empire, which itself then lasted only another generation, until Indian independence in 1947." Surely he should have said "the British imperial rule of India?"

Another ding on the editors/continuity of the text - on page 195 we learn Tsar Alexander II barred women from attending Us in 1861 so Russian women went elsewhere (Chap 5). Why now in Chap 6 is he acting like this is news? And writting it less clearly?

I'm failing to see how Subsaharan Africa experienced a major change in how people studied science in the 15th & 16th c. I don't see the difference from existing tradition, or adoption of what contemporary Islamic astronomers are doing.

Holy conflation Batman! He's really struggling with being accurate and general. How did Ali Qushji publish The Tables of the Sultan in Samarkand in 1473 when his patron/co author was killed in 1449? Turns out he didn't but used data collectes there. WHY COULDN'T U SAY THAT?!?!
