It's OK but not riveting. It is put down able. And pick up able when there's nothing better to do. Let's see how it progresses in the latter two thirds.

Personally I don't really mind the first person approach what I do mind is that person chuntering on about something I'm not really interested in and slows down the action. So I have skimmed a lot of stuff. I'm about half done and at last the plot starts to thicken into something readable rather than the soupy dishwater I've had to wade through to get here. Im still reading...

Well, now we are getting to the more interesting bits.. fewer lists - perhaps his heroin habit has wiped some of the more insidious details - but nevertheless there are lots of lists of names etc. JCC is 5 years older than me at 72 (currently) and yet he seems to remember the most insignificant details which don't add much to what is underneath - an interesting journey. I am still reading if that's any indication!

This first part is full of reminiscences which are not much more than lists of products he remembers from his youth joined together by some words and some actual biography... hoping it gets better.

Fascinating reading from a humanitarian, brave and caring surgeon - who is one amongst many, of course, as he points out so very well.

As I think I mentioned this book is certainly dated - but of course it is about technology and the point the book makes is one has to keep up. But its a good read. Just been reading about Cities and disaffected youth and use of technology - as we have been seeing in Portland and more recently the US insurrection. So still a useful read for me... just gotta think ahead of the game.

So that's Part 1 done. As I mentioned it was all bit dated but there were some interesting ideas. My main gripe is he didn't do his Dr Who homework properly, the police box is not just a space craft as he so erroneously called it, it's a time machine as well: TARDIS "Time And Relative Dimension In Space" and time has beaten the author because Dr Who is alive and well and back on the TV. (Its 2021 now). Onwards...

This is an interesting book, but frustratingly it, because of the very subject it is talking about, is dated. It's okay though, it just means for the book I'm trying to write I just have to fire up my own imagination based on some of the things I am reading about.

I am reading this because I am attempting to write a dystopian Science Fiction Novel set in the future and need to know more about robotic warfare. So this seems to be what I need to read. 10% in and its a good read so far.

Ahhh - James Lee Burke is my absolute favourite author - why oh why have a I left it this long to pick up one of his books? His writing is delicious. I only wish I could write like this. 6% into the book and I had to put it down to come here and castigate myself for leaving it so long since I picked up one of his books. Here's a notion of my fandom, I wrote to James once AND he wrote back!! Out of space to write m.

Interesting insight into British Prisons - especially at a time when we all feel like we are in prison - but after reading this you will be glad you are still in your own front room.

It's my own fault really. It was 0.99p and I was tempted because I didn't have much to read on my kindle. I don't know why but this book just seems like a cut and paste job from wikipedia. Loads of irrelevant (for me) details to the extent it starts to read like a tourist brochure for Florence. Florence for Dummies. It got to the point where I was just reading the topic sentence of each paragraph and skim reading

Still a long-winded read and by about 44% I had started to skim read some of the chapters, especially those about the political intrigue - well less intrigue but page filler. Still reading but just not all of it...

Ok a quarter done and I sort of get the feeling that Dan Brown always takes the long road, drawing out the action, maybe that's a good thing. I'm still waiting for something to exciting happen to get me hooked (recently at about 23% there was an indication, a little signpost that something was awry) and to turn this book into what publicists call a "page turner".

Rob Burton is on page 78 of 132 of An American Bum in China
As an expat still living and working in China Matthew Evans is for me a recognisable (American) type. While he might have been more misguided than most in his wayward '(mis)adventures' I have heard similar stories of lost passports, arrest and general White Face Monkey goings on in many a bar, late at night. Still, it it an enjoyable read that gets me tutting, shaking my head and laughing at the scrapes he gets into

I am persevering with this book as I am interested in the subject matter and the history is fascinating - what I don't get is Oliver's habit of filling in the blanks with conjecture and fanciful notions of what people were thinking and their reasons for doing what they did. He quite plainly notes the Vikings didn't leave a written history and what was written was done centuries after the fact by other people.

I'm no great fan of Neil Oliver either as a presenter or an archeaologist - I think he thinks he's more important than he really is and is given, in my opinion, to stating the bleeding obvious. But the book was 0.99p and I have written my own book (fiction) which included Vikings and I enjoyed doing the research so I thought I'd give it a go. And to be fair to Mr Oliver, I am enjoying the read so far...

Once again this unique character is involved in various unsavoury deeds and out of it comes a great story written very well in my humble opinion, I am enjoying this series very much.
