I am struggling with this already. I wasn’t even on chapter 3 when I was ready to DNF. Everything has a different name for things. Years, I assume, are “turns” or weeks, maybe days. It’s not clear to me. They segregate the peoples by weird names that don’t stick with me, and the way this story is told makes it hard to imagine in sequence. I heard good things so I’ll try to push through.

So, almost halfway through and other than being annoyed by the crime scene tape (where had it been during the service the day before?), the next annoying part is the ridiculous dinner. So many words and I just want to get on with the story. Finding it hard to care about these characters.

I’m only 9% through and already the narrative has me frustrated. I just want a cozy little palate cleanser between heavies and you have this chick taking a “shot” of Malbec (it would be a hard day), brushing her teeth and then eating two Altoids?? Who takes a shot of wine, then brushes teeth before eating sugar.

Chapter 31, if you were wondering, is where we find out that Lily placed her fringed shawl in her purse on the seat next to her. Thank goodness I was so wondering about that, since it was too cool to go without one outside with the sleeveless dress she was wearing. And, the lobster vs sole discussion brought so much dimension to the narrative of this story. Eye. Roll.

Suddenly, the ghost has realized the whole time his wife didn’t love him yet he was thinking about her all beginning of the story. Meanwhile…let’s take a break from the mystery to break into a diatribe about the “roaring 20’s” for the ghost who has decided to ask about the Great Depression. What.

The base of this story intrigues me enough to keep going but for goodness’ sake I don’t care what happens after you take the yogurt out of the ice box!! Oh, you mean…the reader surely needs to know that the foil top was peeled off and thrown in the trash can.

If you’re listening to the audio book, skip the disclaimer if you don’t want spoilers. I’m not sure why anyone would think a book about a dragon war college wouldn’t have violence so not sure why they’d need a disclaimer in the first place.

So I’m enjoying this book so far...until I got to this page. Xander is casually ordering beer in a Washington state pizza restaurant. The beer is Yuengling - one of my favorites from the East coast where I grew up. Since moving farther West, we have missed it very much because Yuengling DOES NOT distrubute past Arkansas! Ack. I know it’s a small detail, but you simply can not order that beer in Washington.
