Every time this guy adds anything to this shot-for-shot retelling, he adds nothing at all. I know that fleshing out the story wasn't in the brief, but it's disappointing after the first novelisation.

I thought this book was supposed to be about something. So far I'm just getting bored from all this detailed sex between people I just don't care about. There's also a lot of conversations about feelings. I'm not a robot. I like feelings. I don't like whatever this is, though.

So far, I don't get it. Lily is devoid of personality, but that's fine, I know that's how the romance genre goes. Ryle, though? He's unappealing. Everything he says or does comes across as very weird. He appears to lack all social skills. He has no filter in a way that would be so off-putting in real life. He probably has deep emotional scars or whatever, but that doesn't make him less odd. Why the attraction?

Stowe's writing is a lot more Dickensian than I expected. Characters are vivid and written with broad, colourful strokes. Morality is right there to be seen in one's face. Also, there's a huge streak of droll humour. Not what I expected at all.

This is exactly the sort of book I hate. It's just a bunch of tenuously connected social psychology factoids formulated to be shared at parties by pseudo intellectuals who think reading a pop "science" book counts as genuine learning about the world.

Just finished "August" and now I'm left pondering the morality of portraying a historical figure as a rapist. I'm hardly about to go to the defence of Julius Caesar's character, and yeah, he was around over two thousand years ago, but he was still a person, you know?

I'm overthinking it. He was probably a rapist anyway. I just wonder when a human being becomes a character so open to "interpretation".

"In a few hours, they’d be back in Central space. He couldn’t wait, but the thought was surreal. ... The idea of being among recognizable ships, and planets he’d walked a dozen times, and markets full of food he didn’t have any questions about, without a destination in mind, without somewhere that he needed to get to…"

What? Was this story meant to be happening in strange and uncomfortable places? I don't buy it.

So far, this book vascillates rapidly between schmaltzy and irritating. Who is Kezzie and why is she stinking up a sci fi novel with all her extremely 2020s internet speech patterns? The writing style feels very much like that, too. Like the work of a fanfiction author.

I hate when books make me feel old.

Glancing through the reviews, I am reminded of how there is no hate quite so vociferous as the hate of a schoolchild towards a prescribed book. I remember my fellow students talking like this when I was a kid, too. I remain as baffled as ever by the phenomenon.

Our hero has disappeared and is sending cryptic texts to his frantic girlfriend while giving her no hint as to where he is, what he's doing, if he's okay, or if he will be okay.

Is it believable behaviour? Hell yes, it is. I've been Violet too many times in my life and reading all of Finch's bullshit is making some serious anger resurface. But why on Earth do people like this kid again? "Book boyfriend" my arse.
