Holly Ites is on page 128 of 304 of Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression
I'm not enjoying this book as much as I thought I would, but it still brings back memories of a time when family was everything.

A little difficult to get into, especially with the Celtic names. But, now that I have the characters sorted out, I'm completely hooked on the story!

This looks to be a like methodone treatment for my "Downton Abbey" withdrawal.

Publishers Weekly says Meissner's prose is "exquisite." I have to agree!

So far, I'm pretty disappointed in this book. The story line is predictable and the dialogue unimaginative.

Holly Ites is on page 190 of 432 of American Phoenix: The Remarkable Story of William Skinner, A Man Who Turned Disaster Into Destiny
Another good book on my shelf. This little known, yet significantly tragic incident, is retold with great detail and meticulous research. It, of course, helps that the protagonist is an ancestor of the author. But, it speaks beautifully of how America was forged by hard working immigrants.

So far, I've laughed out loud four times while reading this book. I catch myself nodding my head, as if I'm in the same room with the authors, listening to them tell this story. Definitely a fun read!
