Savouring this as I reflect on my own tryst with intense loneliness in the past year living completely alone surrounded by gentrification that had fallen painfully silent; I leave this city now for home in a couple of days and this has been a work of bittersweet catharsis and an affirmation for the state I was in -"In the absence of love, I found myself clinging hopelessly to the city itself"Laing is a magical writer

This has exceeded all my expectations. What an engaging account of the origins of Western Philosophy, the lives of the philosophers and the historical, political and social landscape of the Pre-peloponnesian war Greek era to contextualise their evolution of thought. A little disappointed that my suspicions about men largely (or wholly) being gatekeepers of the revolution of thought and intelligentsia, may be true

"To be incapable of taking one's enemies, accidents, even one's misdeeds seriously for very long-that is the sign of strong, full natures in whom there is an excess of the power to form,to mold,to recuperate and to forget" - F.Nietzsche

"At the same time, however, the film also disconcertingly dips into another world—a world, like that of our dreams, where true lovers find and re-find one another in flagrant violation of causation and the other laws by which reality is constrained" Brilliant psychoanalysis of the most poigna scenes in the essay by David Reeve

I remember second-guessing ever picking up the book. Always gravitating toward tragedies. I remember feeling a sense of sick reluctance, because I'd had much too much of the bleak, gloomy overarching themes to all that I've ventured to read this year. One story down, & it feels like a sucker punch. I didn't know I was sinking into the quicksand of the tale the moment it began. & I don't mind sinking some more.
