A pretty enjoyable read. It doesn't take itself too seriously, thankfully, and I like the relationship between the two main characters (they hate each other's guts).

So: it's actually just space magic.

I'm actually really enjoying this. A good yarn.

So far this book is not all it's cracked up to be. Sparrow 11 and Sparrow 2 are so far the most interesting characters. Which is saying something since they're drones. Also, the mathematics-based weapons and technologies (aren't they all based on it?) has so far proven to be a jumble of words for unexciting and abstract space-magic.

So far I'm loving this book. It's kind of like that Terran Marine trailer for Starcraft II, where he gets all the power armour bits builted onto him, pops a cigar in his mouth and says "Hell, it's about time."

I was so inspired I fired up DOOM and jumped back into it, blasting imps and bashing in demon skulls into the wee hours, something I haven't done for years.

Oh yes, and there are no pretty women wearing cyber-helmets in it. The cover lies.

This is basically Sven Hassel in space, just without the stuff that makes it Sven Hassel (the insane humour). It doesn't bother explaining stuff, keeps the war low-tech and lets the astute reader fill in the blanks.

Good grief. Genji is such a dirty, dodgy piece of work. No wonder his wife spurns him.

Reading this is getting kinda like pulling teeth. But I have time now after NaNoWriMo (and having done it, I wonder if this is a NaNo novel...).

So about halfway through this and here's a summary:

This is basically a Southern plantation in the guise of a generation ship in space: literally, there are only black people (lower deckers) and whites (upper deckers) on this ship. Main character would like to kill all of the upper deckers. There are hints of the Arab slave trade but I suspect this is unintentional.

Tough read if you are a sensitive person.
