I am only half way through but it broke my heart to read about the liberalization that had begun to emerge in Japan being choked off by fascists and the early light of egalitarianism embraced by progressives seeking to condemn racism squelched by the US and the UK in the league of nations. It could have been different. There can be no quarter given to demagogues that offer glory in exchange for control.
