This book should have been tailor made for me, but I could not stand the writing style or the characters.

returned the audiobook; production was too annoying for me

the audiobook narrator isn't my favorite. i'm considering returning it and trying the ebook instead. i'm also not seeing the becky chambers or martha wells comparisons yet; the characters are all pretty annoying (despite being hundreds of years old?).

the feast and night tourney chapter was maybe one of the most nauseating and anxiety inducing reading experiences i’ve ever had, wow! the way the tension just built and built was incredible.

i’m sorry but this prose is ridiculous. there’s a difference between beautiful writing and overwrought, and the author has confused the two. i can’t tell what’s happening because i keep getting slapped over the head with these metaphors

i feel like i’m tripping over metaphors left right and center—the prose is almost heady

not a huge fan of the split time approach. i’m more invested in the ‘then’ chapters and find the ‘now’ corporate interview sections dull. they also blatantly spoil what’s coming.

i also find the captain’s tragic backstory and her relationship with kane to be too much, too quickly. i’m not invested in them as characters yet, and these moments (backstory reveal; acting on feelings) do not feel earned.

dark academia: attack of the clones

waiting for the plot to show up and for the characters to be compelling in any meaningful way

enjoying some POVs, mildly annoyed at others, and hoping hoping hoping the back half will completely blow me away
